Art Scholarship in Willingshausen

The small village of Willingshausen in the region called the Schwalm is said to be the oldest artist´s colony in Europe. It was founded in 1820 by Gerhardt von Reutern, a painter of the Romantic period, who came to the village as a guest of Schwertzell Castle and, delighted by the landscape and country life, invited artist friends to join him there. The colony remained in its prime until well into the 20th century; members included Ludwig Emil Grimm, Ludwig Knaus, Otto Ubbelohde, Wilhelm Thielmann, and Carl Bantzer, among others.

Formerly mainly painters, scholarship holders who come to this idyllic community in the Schwalm now include representatives of the full scale of modern artistic activity in all its medial and conceptual varieties.

The scholarship offers a three-month stay in Willingshausen. The scholarship holder resides at the historic “Shepherd´s Cottage“, built in 1562, and an atelier in the “Gerhardt von Reutern House“ is at his or her disposal. The house is also the home of the “Painters ´ Room“, which keeps the memory of the art history of the village alive. At the end of the three-month stay an exhibition is arranged in the new and modern Art Hall. This new building with its appealing architectural design meets even professional requirements, and it underlines once again the importance of the cultural history of the Community of Willingshausen.
